Sahabat Laut Lestari, represented by our Director Eko Octavianus had an opportunity to join the 2022 Asia Pacific FIP CoP Workshop as a panelist with Meysella Anugrah (AP2HI), Imam Syuhada (IPNLF/YII), Wildan (MDPI) to discuss and share lessons learned about implementing traceability and electronic monitoring in small-scale tuna fisheries in Indonesia on 11th and 13th of October 2022.
Asia Pacific FIP CoP (Community of Practices) Workshop aims to share examples (case studies, tools) of traceability and electronic monitoring in small-scale fisheries, including lessons learned and recommendations for FIP implementers, and benefits to FIP stakeholders. The workshop lined up with some great speakers from some Asia Pacific countries such as Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
During the workshop, Sahabat Laut Lestari shared our lesson learned from TraceTalesᵀᴹ implementation as traceability software in processing companies benefit small-scale fishers communities that are certified as Fair Trade certified fishers. Mutual benefits between technology implementation and certification projects including fishery improvement projects could improve small-scale fishers community awareness on traceability, create transparency between industry and small-scale fishers community, and enforce technology implementation from the grass-root to factory level.
Sahabat Laut Lestari also addresses some challenges in technology implementation for small-scale fisheries such as data and technology integration between technology providers, government, and private sector / global market platforms. Including harmonization requirements between the import monitoring systems and certification standard; grass-root level policy especially to accommodate small-scale fishers conditions to improve their awareness, knowledge, and benefit to improve their value of the product by implementing technology in their supply chain; and financial scheme such as industry contribution to the implementation of technology on the small scale fishers level.
We also learn some best practices and discuss some challenges in small-scale fisheries from each organization and country.
